What is Dimensional Weight (DIM Weight)?

Shipping carriers like UPS and FedEx have limited space on their trucks and planes. If you ship a giant box filled with light feathers, they lose money. To prevent this, they calculate Dimensional Weight (volumetric weight) based on the size of the box.

The Formula

(Length × Width × Height) / DIM Divisor

For US domestic shipments, the standard divisor is 139. If the result is larger than the actual physical weight of the box, you will be billed for the Dimensional Weight instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard DIM divisor for UPS and FedEx?

For standard US domestic retail shipments, both UPS and FedEx currently use a DIM divisor of 139 (measured in inches/lbs). Keep in mind, if you have a negotiated commercial account, your divisor might be much higher (e.g., 166 or 250), saving you money.

Why do carriers charge by Dimensional Weight?

Carriers have limited space on their trucks and airplanes. If you ship a very large but lightweight box (like pillows), it takes up valuable space. DIM weight ensures they are compensated fairly for the volume the package occupies.
